Tattoo Aftercare

Proper aftercare is an important part of protecting your new tattoo.

Always follow the specific instructions given to you by your artist, as bandaging and aftercare methods may vary.

IF YOUR ARTIST APPLIED A SECOND-SKIN BANDAGE

Your artist will tell you how long to leave your bandage on based on the product used and your tattoo.

  1. Leave the bandage in place for the amount of time recommended by your artist.
  2. Some fluid, ink and plasma collecting underneath the bandage can be normal.
  3. Remove the bandage gently, preferably under warm running water.
  4. If the bandage begins leaking, becomes compromised, or causes significant irritation, remove it and begin traditional aftercare.
  5. Do not reapply second-skin unless instructed by your artist.

Once removed, follow the washing and moisturizing instructions below.

IF YOUR ARTIST DID NOT USE SECOND-SKIN

Remove your initial bandage when instructed by your artist.

Always wash your hands before touching your tattoo.

Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial or gentle soap. Use clean hands only—no washcloths, loofahs or scrubbing.

Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean paper towel. Allow the tattoo to air dry briefly before applying any aftercare product.

MOISTURIZING

For the first few days, your artist may recommend a very thin layer of Aquaphor, Hustle Butter, or another approved aftercare product.

After the initial healing period, switch to a fragrance-free, dye-free lotion such as Lubriderm or another gentle moisturizer.

Apply only enough to lightly moisturize the tattoo. Do not smother or over-moisturize it.

Continue gently washing and moisturizing as needed while your tattoo heals.

DURING HEALING

Your tattoo may become dry, itchy, flaky or lightly scabbed as it heals. Do not scratch, pick or peel it. Let peeling and scabbing come off naturally.

Avoid:

  1. Swimming, hot tubs, baths or soaking the tattoo
  2. Direct sunlight and tanning beds
  3. Picking or scratching
  4. Tight, dirty or abrasive clothing over the tattoo
  5. Excessive friction or anything that repeatedly rubs the area

Showers are fine—just avoid prolonged soaking and direct high-pressure water on the fresh tattoo.

WHAT’S NORMAL?

Mild redness, tenderness, warmth, swelling and some clear/plasma or ink-colored drainage can occur during the first few days and should gradually improve.

Seek medical attention if you develop worsening or spreading redness, increasing swelling or pain, pus-like drainage, red streaking, fever, chills, or other signs of infection.

If you’re unsure whether your tattoo is healing normally, contact your artist or the shop.

LONG-TERM CARE

Once your tattoo is completely healed, keep the skin moisturized and protect your tattoo from the sun. Regular use of broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher will help protect your skin and keep your tattoo looking its best.
